Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Even when your mouth feels fine, you should attend dental visits (at least) every six months. Skipping these sessions puts your smile at risk of trouble.

Firstly, dental checkups and cleanings prevent major oral conditions. They let dentists (including Dr. Karpman) detect and treat your mouth’s minor problems before bigger issues arise. To be specific, the visits remove built-up plaque and tartar that could give you cavities, gum disease, or worse. That means they reduce your risk of dental emergencies and oral health dilemmas.

Dental checkups and cleanings also save you time and money in the long term. Each visit only takes an hour and gets full coverage from dental insurance, so skipping one just isn’t worthwhile. Doing so could make you pay for a pricey and time-consuming treatment (root canals, tooth extractions, etc.) later.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

When you attend a dental checkup at our office, expect the following:

  • An Oral Exam – At each checkup, you’ll receive an oral exam that checks your teeth, bite, and dental work. It also screens you for potential signs of oral cancer.
  • Dental X-rays – We take dental X-rays once a year to see if patients have issues below the surface.
  • Medical History Review – As part of your checkup, we’ll likely update your medical history and medications. Doing so helps us see if the medicines you take affect your oral health.
  • Treatment Plan(s) – We’ll draft a custom treatment plan for you if we detect something from the exam. Dr. Karpman will then lay things out step by step.
  • A Brief Q&A – We’ll gladly address any questions you have near your visit’s end.

Daily brushing and flossing can’t reach all of your mouth, so we perform teeth cleanings after each checkup. They feature:

  • Precise Cleaning – A hygienist will use special instruments to remove the plaque (and tartar) between your teeth and along your gums.
  • Polishing – We’ll polish your teeth after the main cleaning to help them shine brighter. In fact, doing so will remove your smile’s minor stains.
  • Flossing – Your teeth will be flossed as part of the cleaning. That way, we can eliminate plaque we may have missed earlier.
  • Fluoride Treatment – Near the cleaning’s end, we may apply a fluoridated gel to your teeth. This gel strengthens your enamel and protects it from decay and cavities.
