Dentures are one of the most common ways to replace missing teeth. In fact, according to calculations based on U.S. Census data and the Simmons National Consumer Survey, roughly 40 million Americans used dentures in 2020. Despite their popularity, there are still several denture myths that persist. Let’s set the record straight and debunk five of the most common misconceptions about dentures.

Myth #1: Dentures Are Unreliable

When it comes to dentures and other dental restorations, the truth is that you get what you pay for. If you shop around looking for the cheapest dentures available, you may end up with a low-quality restoration that does not fit comfortably or last long. On the other hand, high-quality dentures are customized for optimal fit, function, and appearance. If you partner with an experienced dentist for a properly fitting denture, you will be able to smile, eat, and laugh without worry.

Myth #2: Dentures Last a Lifetime

While every person’s experience is slightly different, you can likely expect your dentures to last between five to eight years with proper care. If your dentures do not fit properly, they may be subject to increased chewing forces and end up breaking down faster. Dentures made from cheap materials may also have a shorter lifespan. If you want to keep your dentures in great shape for as long as possible, be sure to clean them every day, soak them at night, and visit a dentist for routine checkups every six months.

Myth #3: Dentures Always Fall Out When People Talk or Chew

If you opt for quality dentures that fit properly, you should never have to worry about your replacement teeth falling out when you speak or eat. You can also apply a bit of dental adhesive to your dentures to make sure they stay in place. For an even more secure solution, consider implant dentures. Implants are small titanium screws that integrate directly with the jawbone. Once healed, your dentist can attach a full row of artificial teeth to them. Implant dentures provide superior stability and chewing power compared to traditional dentures.

Myth #4: I Can Wear My Dentures All Day and Night

You should take your dentures out every night and soak them while you sleep. Wearing dentures restricts the circulation in your gums, which can lead to tissue irritation and swelling. By taking your false teeth out at night, you are giving your gums an opportunity to recover and get the nutrients they need. In addition, the dark, moist space underneath dentures is an ideal place for bacteria to thrive. So, if you want to preserve your oral health, be sure to remove your dentures before going to bed each night.

Myth #5: Dentures Will Make Me Look Older

If you are missing most or all of your teeth, wearing dentures can help you maintain a younger, more vibrant appearance. If you don’t replace missing teeth, your facial muscles will begin to sag, which can give your face a sunken appearance. Properly fitting dentures provide critical support to collapsed facial muscles to keep people looking young.

Now that you know what’s fact and fiction when it comes to dentures, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist if you think you may benefit from this popular tooth replacement solution.
