Fluoride is a naturally occurring compound that has been found to benefit our smiles. Though it can be found in rocks and is released into the soil, water, and air, it is also added to many public water sources. It can also be found in dental products like toothpaste and mouthwash to help strengthen your teeth against decay as well as make you less likely to develop tooth infections or gum disease. In addition, fluoride is contained in many foods. Continue reading to learn about four foods with fluoride that can help you keep your smile in good condition.
Food #1: Raw Fruit
Fruit is not only a tasty treat, but eating crisp, fresh fruit helps promote saliva production to prevent dry mouth. They can also work as natural toothbrushes by helping clean your teeth. In addition, there are several kinds of fruit that benefit your beam by providing it with extra fluoride. These include:
- Apples
- Grapes
- Peaches
- Bananas
- Avocados
- Watermelon
Food #2: Seafood
Salmon, clams, and shrimp are high in protein, vitamin B12, selenium, and zinc. Additionally, shrimp, crab, and some other types of shellfish are excellent sources of fluoride. Though seafood costs more than fruit, these foods are a great way to occasionally treat yourself to a fancy meal that your dentist would approve of.
Food #3: Potatoes
Potatoes contain lots of vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium. Though any kind of potato prepared in any way will have some fluoride in them, baked russet potatoes in particular can contain a lot of it. A baked potato makes a great side for a seafood feast.
Food #4: Grapes, Raisins, and Wine
As previously mentioned, grapes are one of the many fruits that contain a lot of fluoride. Raisins are also high in fluoride and can be added to a bowl of fat-free or non-fat yogurt with some fresh fruit for a tasty breakfast. Wine is also high in fluoride, and a glass of it will go great with your seafood dinner. Just be wary of the large amount of sugar in raisins and the stain-causing properties of red wine. Raisins should be eaten in moderation, and you should consider following up with a glass of water after finishing your glass of wine.
By eating these foods with fluoride, you can provide your smile with some extra protection against tooth decay and other oral health conditions. So, go ahead and snack on some fruit or have a glass of wine with dinner tonight. Your smile will thank you for it!
